3 of November - Black Sensation at Mikkeller Bar

I have seen many things in my time. I have seen shipwrecks, havoc and instantaneous death.  I am in touch with the dark side – so believe me, when I tell you: November the third will be a dark and stormy night. And in one particular place in town darkness will gather, it will be slithering down the walls, coming out of the light bulbs and above all – pouring out of as many as 20 tabs. This place where darkness rules will be Mikkeller Bar. This particular night there will be a great variety of[...]

The diverse nature of beer and people

Here at Mikkeller we are of course very interested in having as many people as possible taste our beer. But not only quantity matters, it never hurts to add a bit of star quality to your crowd of loyal customers. To spell it out it would of course be more interesting if President Obama tasted our beer , and liked it, than if Local Bob did. That is why, among other reasons, we are so very pleased with the image above, depicting the Danish princess-one-day-to-be-queen Mary, holding a glass of[...]

Real beer for real Vikings

Here in Scandinavia we consider ourselves Vikings - or at least direct descendants of the Vikings. Many people think that life as a Viking is a walk in the park. But nothing could be further from the truth. Life as a Viking is hard. A Viking wakes up early and goes to bed late. And in between, there is a lot of things a Viking must do. First and most importantly, the Viking helmet must be polished to a shine, the Viking boat prepared, you need to conquer England and finally there is beer that[...]

Back from De Molen

Today is the first day at the office after the festival at De Molen. So I'm a little tired, but certainly happy. To spend an entire weekend with happy beer geeks, brewers and colleagues is always a fantastic experience. This year we had chosen to bring a lot of sour beer to the festival. Sour beer divides people in two: those who love them and those who don't. So while some went in vain for the well-known hoppy IPA's and big stouts from Mikkeller, others were standing by the Mikkeller stand for[...]

Mikkeller + Bedow

Here at Mikkeller we develop about 80 new beers each year. However, not every beer comes in a bottle, some only come in kegs and many are only brewed one time. But having said that, there are constantly new labels on their way in and out and since we work with many different label designers we are in contact with many different expressions and styles. Recently, Mikkeller cooperated with Bedow, a Swedish graphic design studio run by Perniclas Bedow. Mikkeller brewed a summer Pilsner, Bedow[...]

Festival at De Molen

Although we here at Mikkeller hate repetition and predictability, we do have certain traditions. One of them is that we each autumn take a trip to Holland, to Bodegraven to attend the beer festival at De Molen. This year is no exception. The festval at De Molen gives us the opportunity to meet a lot of happy beer geeks, brewers and col-leagues. Again this year, Menno, Bea and the rest of the Dutch team has commissioned sunshine and blue skies, so if you haven’t planned your trip to this[...]

Farmhouse IPA

High up in Alaska, where the bears rule, where the winters are long and dark, and where a man is a man that digs for gold. High up north, where you only go if you are in search of happiness and easy money. Or if you are on the run from the long arm of the law. Up there lies a brewery. In our opinion, one of the most exciting American breweries we have become familiar with for a very long time. Of course I'm talking about Anchorage Brewing Company. At Anchorage they brew barrel aged beers; all[...]

New Cream Ale

KIHOSKH, one of Copenhagen's best beer stores, is a big fan of beer from Mikkeller. Summer and winter there is always a large selection of our beers in their store. Mikkeller has repeatedly brewed beer especially for KIHOSKH. And now another new beer from Mikkeller is on its way to KIHOSKH. This time it's a Cream Ale with orange and lemon peel. At KIHOSKH they are not just big fans of Mikkeller, they are also very excited about Keith Shore's label art. And therefore, Keith was contacted when[...]

When I'm behind the wheel in the Mikkeller van, I can easily get a little lonely. I'm pretty sure that many truckers know what I'm talking about here. But instead of talking to other truckers in a walkie talkie or listening to sentimental country songs, I always turn the radio on. And then because I hate stupid pop music, loud hosts so full of themselves that it spills into the microphone and people calling in sharing their latest dating humiliation or painful venereal disease with me and[...]

Fresh and rare

Mikkeller is not just a brewery and a bar, it is also an import company. We import a lot of great beers from around the world. In my opinion one of the most exciting breweries we import to Denmark is 8Wired from New Zealand. Their iStout is fantastic, their HopWired is world class, and the newest beer is nothing less than amazing and world-class at the same time. HopWired Fresh Hop is its name. An IPA brewed with fresh hops from New Zealand. This beer offers you a unique chance to taste those[...]

Mikkeller Bar nominated Best Drink at Årets Gericke

Mikkeller Bar is nominated for best drink experience at Årets Gericke 2012. It's the union of Danish food critics that nominate best food, best service, best drink etc. It's named after a big idol of mine Søren Gericke who introduced the Danes to the Nouvelle Cuisine (modern gourmet food). He is the godfather to most of the successful Danish restaurants today. We are up there with some of the big guns and we are really happy and proud of course. Cross your fingers come September. Døszt?

I'm a Beer Geek. I love beer, I can talk about beer all day and I can drink beer all night. I might as well admit it: I'm a Beer Geek. But having said that, at least I'm only a Beer Geek. If I, in addition to my passion beer, for example was also an avid collector of stamps, then I would probably bore my beer friends with long stories about stamps. And my stamp friends would probably be tired of me talking about beer.So to be passionate about one thing is good, it makes you a Geek, and that's[...]

Brewers are conservative, they stick to their methods, ingredients and processes. And that's just good. If it wasn't this conservatism, we would not be able to enjoy the classic Southern German Weissbier, Czech lager, English bitter or spontaneously fermented beer from Belgium just to name a few styles that, thanks to brewers' conservatism, have been handed down to posterity's beer drinkers. So from here a sincere thanks to all the old brewers, who insist on brewing beer just as their ancestors[...]

Single – the first of three beers.

Today the Trappist yeast arrived to Cabinet Artisanal Brewhouse, and finally we could start brewing. The first beer to be brewed is called Singel. It's a simple malt profile, American hops, primary fermented in a red wine barrel with Trappist yeast. Secondary fermentation will also take place in a red wine barrel, but with brettanomyces. The picture on this blog entry shows Terry filling a wine barrel. You will find many more pictures from this brew day at Mikkellers Facebook page.
