The American Dream Project: Mikkeller tasting panel doing beer science

The Mikkeller American Dream Project.   A “research” on the development of the best lager in the world: the Mikkeller American Dream. The Mikkeller Tasting Panel has been studying, tasting and admiring this beer for months. The concept was decided: the four educated tasters open, smell and drink one bottle every week for at time span of 126 days. From the same batch. Every Sunday the beer was put in a fridge, every Monday tasting and making notes. This rigid rule of cooling down and drinking at[...]

Yeast Series 2.0

At Mikkeller we love beer by the series. Because producing a whole series, where you each time change the recipe a tiny bit, is the only way you will truly know precisely what one particular ingredient does to the flavor as a whole. And that is exactly the guiding principle behind Mikkeller’s yeast series 2.0. There are six very different beers in this particular series. They are all made with the same malt, same hops, and the same mash time and temperature. The only difference between the six[...]

Mikkeller Spirits - now in Sweden

You've probably noticed how many Swedes you always meet at Mikkeller Bar. We are of course very happy that this is the case. As we have become accustomed to snuff cans on the tables and the spicy scent of köttbullar (Swedish meatballs), which is always part of meeting with the always polite and well-dressed Swedes. A year ago we took the consequences and employeed Rob as a bartender at Mikkeller Bar. First and foremost because he's a great bartender, but certainly also because he masters the[...]

Crooked Moon / Mikkeller DIPA

In Mikkeller we have over the years done many collaboration brews. However, the last one we did was a little unusual - we collaborated with the Swedish tattoo studio Crooked Moon. The two brothers Jacob and Jonas Pedersen that run Crooked Moon Tattoo in Helsingborg wanted to celebrate their tattoo studio’s first birthday with a big party, and what could be more natural than to do it with a beer in their own name? The two brothers have designed the labels for this beer. And therefore this beer[...]

The Tasting Panel (who are they?)

The Tasting Panel. We use people at Mikkeller. This is a short story of how it's done and whom we force to drink beer. As you have all read before on this blog, we have a panel of pro tasting people. And we kindly ask them to assist us in tasting some of our products. This we do to ensure the high quality of Mikkeller beers (and spirits) continues to be as high as we aim for. These pro tasters give us very valuable info and suggestions for brews, adjustments and new ideas. For some months now[...]

Barrel aged Black the Black edition

Barrel aged Black the Black edition is a new beer from Mikkeller. And I do mean Black the Black, not Back in Black, as a reference to AC/DC's amazing album, not Big and Black as a reference to the world famous adult movie, that I'm sure all readers of this blog are familiar with. No, I do mean Black the Black edition. Let me explain to you how the beer is made. We took Mikkellers imperial stout Black and distilled it at Braunstein distillery. The alcohol we got out of it was storaged in[...]

Rumour has it…

A good old friend of Mikkeller, Alexei Popov, sent me an email a few days ago. Alexei told me that he had heard some rumors that there would soon open another Mikkeller Bar in St. Petersburg, Russia. He did not say where he had heard these rumors, but since Alexei was born and raised in Russia, he still has many friends in his old homeland. And I know for sure that if there are rumors circulating among the Russian beer geeks, then Alexei will pick them up sooner or later. Here's what I replied[...]

Old beer – new label

Keith Shore, Mikkeller's label designer and creator of our graphic identity, is currently in the process of giving new life to several of our good old beer labels. Classic beers from Mikkeller have been getting a make-over in Keith the Wizard's workshop, which has given them a whole new look. Jackie Brown, the good old brown ale, that has been an integral part of Mikkeller’s repertoire for the past 5 years, is one of the labels that have undergone a transformation. From brown and slightly[...]

Award-winning label

Today we received a happy e-mail from a happy man. The happy man is Perniclas Bedow, owner and founder of the graphic design studio Bedow. The e-mail says: Hi guys! Just came home from the Swedish Design Awards with the jury's honorable mention - the special award "Graphic delight of the year". The jury says: The Spring Ale label shows  a snowflake transforming into a sun with the help of heat-sensitive ink. A splendid union of concept, technology and craft. Baller Stout

Baller Stout is a blend of 4 different beers. Mikkeller's Beer Geek Brunch, Struise Black Albert, Surly Darkness and Three Floyd’s Dark Lord all blended together and Baller Stout is made. In this video you can see what happens when two beer geeks decide to find out who blended these four beers together and how it works. It turns out that Albert Einstein mixed Beer Geek Brunch and Black Albert. It's a zombie who pours Darkness in the pot, and finally the devil herself, with her alluring violin[...]
