Where Mikkel eats

Everyone knows where he enjoys his beers, but do you know where Mikkel prefers to go for food? Here is an update on all of Mikkeller’s Copenhagen restaurants and what to expect there during the summer months.

Vesterbro Chinese Food

Once upon a time, Mikkel visited the restaurant Mission Chinese Food in San Francisco. He immediately fell in love with the laid-back atmosphere – and the super spicy Chongqing chicken wings, which would stick in his mind and taste buds for years to come. Last year, Mikkel finally persuaded Anthony Myint, co-owner of MCF, to open a restaurant with him in Copenhagen. Vesterbro Chinese Food of course offers Sichuanero chicken wings and other mouthwatering, Sichuan-inspired dishes. However, if you’re not a big chili or a meat lover you needn’t worry: the restaurant has plenty of non-spicy and vegan options on the menu, as well as family meals. Besides a wide variety of different beers, VCF also offers a small, high-quality selection of delicious cocktails and wine. In addition, they have a takeaway option, and if you bring your own food container, you get a 10% discount on your purchase. The restaurant is also part of Anthony Myint’s Zero Foodprint program, which means that it is a carbon-neutral establishment.

Øl & Brød

The atmosphere might be traditionally Danish, but the smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) is inventive. Head Chef David Squire puts a modern twist on traditional smørrebrød, using high-quality, seasonal ingredients from all the best Danish suppliers. Squire – previously a chef at Michelin-starred restaurant Kadeau for over four years – also knows a thing or two when it comes to curating an evening menu. How does ‘Squid pasta, caramelized onion broth & ramson’ sound? Or perhapsMikkeller Monk’s Brew braised pork shank, hispi cabbage, wild mushrooms & lingonberries’?

Snaps pairs perfectly with smørrebrød, and Øl & Brød has the biggest selection in Copenhagen. Quite a few of these are homemade, and the variety is endless. You could go for the seasonal ‘Dill & Cucumber,’ or maybe the ‘Apple, Thyme and Grapefruit’ is more your style. Last but certainly not least, Øl & Brød is currently ranked as one of the top 12 best beer restaurants in the world on Ratebeer.com and is mentioned in the Michelin Guide 2019.

La Neta

Mexican food goes hand in hand with beer: that is a fact! When Mikkel tasted the tacos at La Neta during one of his business trips to Stockholm, he simply could not let go of the thought of merging this great Mexican street food with Mikkeller’s beer. He immediately got in touch with La Neta’s owner, Mexican entrepreneur Ricardo Medrano Treviño. Mikkel convinced Treviño to team up with him and open La Neta on Nørrebrogade in Copenhagen. The restaurant became an instant success with both locals and beer enthusiasts. Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated the opening of a second La Neta location, this time on Istedgade in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro neighborhood. Stop by the colorful and beautifully decorated taqueria for tacos, quesadillas, guacamole, homemade salsa, Mikkeladas (house cocktail), La Sirenitas (house beer), mango lemonade, Mexican vibes and happy faces. In addition to all of the above, La Neta has a great daily lunch offer (with vegan options): Two large tacos with fried rice for 95 kr. On Taco Tuesdays you can get three small tacos for 75 kr.

La Neta Vesterbro has no less than 80 seats on the sunny side corner of Istedgade and Dannebrogsgade – the perfect summer spot to enjoy delicious food and great drinks in a fun setting.

Ramen to Bíiru

Mikkeller’s three ramen restaurants in Copenhagen are a direct result of the inspiration Mikkel got from his many business trips to Japan, as well as from his friendship with Japanese chef Daisuke Uki, who owns a small Japanese restaurant in Copenhagen. Mikkel and his family have celebrated quite a few sushi & sashimi birthdays at Uki’s restaurant, Bento, and at some point during one of these frequent visits, the idea of an authentic Japanese ramen bar in Copenhagen arose. Mikkel and Daisuke persuaded Daisuke’s friend – and ramen Master Chef – Takuro Otani to come to Copenhagen and spread his ramen magic here. Three years and three restaurants later, ramen has quickly become a favorite fast food meal amongst Copenhageners and beer tourists alike.

All three restaurants offer 15 different authentic Japanese-style ramen dishes. These include a Chicken Paitan style (exclusive to the Østerbro location), three savory vegan options, a monthly special and a Kids’ Ramen offer. On the beer side of things, there are six rotating taps, plus a vending machine full of exciting world-class craft beer! Takeaway is available for pickup at all locations; as an extra service for the Østerbro location only, it can also be ordered online via ramentobiiru.dk.

Hyggestund

How would you most love to start off a slow morning in Copenhagen? You’d probably want a laid-back, cosy atmosphere, with mellow music playing and newspapers to read. Add some excellent coffee, newspapers, simple, high-quality food and friendly service, and you’ve got yourself an ideal start to your day, right? This ideal morning environment was Mikkel’s goal for breakfast and lunch restaurant Hyggestund, which is located just down the street from the the original Mikkeller Bar and next door to sister restaurant Øl & Brød on Viktoriagade in Vesterbro.

At Hyggestund, you can choose from one of their solid classics like the Waffle Breakfast or Fried Chicken Burger. Or if you prefer, you can concoct your own hangover meal, with sweet and salty sides like avocado, fresh fruit and bacon. A brand-new, heavenly item on the menu is Beer Geek Pancakes, served with vanilla whipped cream and berries.

You can easily bring the youngsters as well for a Kids Breakfast and drawing kits.

For a feistier morning, go for the ‘Voksenjuice’ (juice for adults), Gammel Dansk or Beer Geek Coffee Stout on tap.

Selma

Swedish Chef Magnus Pettersson is the man behind Selma, which has quickly become a favorite Copenhagen lunch and dinner spot. Right now, it is nominated as ‘Best Lunch in Town’ by Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende and was recently awarded a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide.

Magnus Petterson previously worked as a chef at Copenhagen restaurants Aamanns Etablissement and the Paul, and started his own small place a few years ago at a food court in Copenhagen. Mikkel, who had known Magnus for some time, stopped by his food court establishment a couple of times. Once he tasted Petterson’s delicious smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches), he did not hesitate in suggesting they join forces. The two of them soon agreed to team up and open a restaurant in Nørrebro.

Reviews have praised Magnus Pettersson for reinventing smørrebrød and raising its standards.

“I think my greatest force in regard to smørrebrød is that I’m not Danish. I did not grow up with it, which gives me a new, fresh approach to it,” he explains.

The restaurant has 12 taps with rotating beer from Mikkeller and a few other top craft breweries. In addition, it offers a variety of organic and natural wines. The menu changes daily according to the seasonal availability of ingredients.

WarPigs

This place is Mikkel’s old love that never fades. Mikkel spent a few years of his youth at university in the US on running scholarships and developed a soft spot for American diners and food culture. He dreamt of a place that combined some of this culture with the best beer in the world. This dream came to life four years ago through a collaboration with the Chicago-based craft brewery 3 Floyds. The brewpub elegantly combines Texan Barbeque with American-Danish style craft beers. WarPigs is well-known for its irresistible scent of smoke (from the meat smokers), the aroma of hops and grain (from the brewery), its heavy metal audience, laid-back atmosphere and its great interior. The location boasts a large outdoor seating area perfect for enjoying the sunshine.

WarPigs always has 22 beers on tap, most of them freshly-tapped from the brewery’s steel tanks.

In the four years since opening, Warpigs has hosted a string of legendary events, including its famed yearly birthday celebration and a couple of Oktoberfests. And if your favorite band is playing in town chances are they can be found here before the show.
